Product Tips by Light Ideas, Inc.

Here are some tips on caring for your lighting fixtures and ceiling fans in the Florida climate.

Lighting Fixtures

Lighting Fixtures  In Florida the elements are very harsh on exterior as well as interior lighting fixtures.  If you are have fixtures in a brass or antique brass finish, you will need extra care to protect the finish.  We recommend a product call Polier, which is a brass protectorant.  It is not a cleaner, but a wax.  If this is not available to you, a non-abrasive wax like Jubilee, or Turtle wax is acceptable.   Polishing your fixtures twice a year will cause the finish to hold up considerably longer than without it.

Exterior fixtures in the above finishes will also benefit from the extra protection.  If you have painted exterior fixtures they should be cleaned several times per year.  Just use a soft cloth and water.  Chemicals from fertilizers and pest control can damage the finish if the fixtures are not cleaned.

Bathroom fixtures are another area that needs some additional protection against humidity and steam that is present in the bath area.   The same wax above will prolong the finish on these fixtures as well.  Apply the wax heavily around the corners and edges of the bath fixtures that have finishes in antique brass, chrome, or polished brass.  On intricate fixtures that need cleaning, we recommend you use a hair dryer to dust them. The new models of 1500 watts or so have great power and will blast any dust from small intricate areas that cannot be reached by hand.

Ceiling Fans

Ceiling Fans with brass, antique brass, polished brass or chrome finishes can also benefit from wax protectorant.  Ceiling fans should have all of the screws checked to be sure that they are tight:

  • At the canopy and on the top of the fan where the downrods are connected.
  • It is very important that the set screws on the downrod and the hang true ball are tight.
  • Next check the blade irons to the blades.  There should be three screws in each.
  • Then check the screws that hold the blades to the motor.

If all the screws are tight and the fan has a wobble, then it probably has warped blades.  You may need to purchase a new set if they are out of warranty, which is usually one year from the purchase date.  There are also blade balancing kits available to you if you do not want to purchase a new set.

Cleaning the fans with a soft cloth and water will help to maintain the finishes.  Use not cleaner with chemicals or abrasives.   Most of the ceiling fans today, iwth the exception of the Hunter Olde Tyme, require no oil as they all have sealed bearings and are maintenance free.
